Options give you the right to control a larger amount of the underlying with a relatively small upfront payment. That upfront cost, the premium, is typically much smaller than buying the asset itself. Because you’re paying only a small premium to gain that right, a modest move in the underlying can translate into a much larger percentage gain in the option’s value. In other words, your return on the money you actually put in (the premium) can be much bigger than the return on the asset itself, which is what we mean by leverage.

This leverage is strongest when the premium is small, since the initial investment is limited to that premium. If the option expires worthless, you lose only the premium, which is another reason why the small premium price creates significant leverage. The other statements describe scenarios that don’t produce this effect: paying the full upfront price buys the asset outright with no leverage; a large premium reduces leverage; and options aren’t limited to currencies, so currency-only isn’t relevant to the leverage concept.
